The Best Poses for Couples Taking Pictures Together

K: If you looked at the blog now, you'd probably never guess that before Brandon and I got engaged, we had about five pictures together. The quality of our photos was bad (hello, selfie) and we never took time to document our experiences. We finally got around to taking some engagement photos together and then, our wedding changed everything. We came to the conclusion that we needed to start documenting our moments together (the big and the small).  Now, armed with thousands of beautiful photos, we finally feel like we have some different shots and a variety of poses to put around our house in frames.

Over the past few months, we've come to realize that a few poses work better than others. We figured we probably aren't the only ones struggling to do better than the old, "face the front and smile" pose. Here's our list of the best poses for couples:

1. The Sit and Lean

It's cute, intimate, and works best if you're surrounded by nature (like a park or a beach). Probably a good idea for the ladies to wear shorts or pants in this pose, or else you'll be awkwardly fixing your dress through the photoshoot.

*Tip: Make sure you look before you sit! We accidentally sat on wet grass one time and that was not a pretty picture.

2. The Forehead Kiss

Forehead kisses are special to us. Brandon told me early on that he only gives this kind of kiss if he means it. It's tender, affectionate, and sweet.

*Tip: Try closing your eyes for a sweeter photo

3. One Knee Up

This is a cute pose if you have a narrow space to lean against. It can be a very symmetrical shot and allows you to have an interesting background or focal point.

*Tip: Make sure the space isn't too narrow or your knees will touch!

4. Leading the Way

Ever since I saw an article on a couple who did this pose in every place around the world, I've wanted to replicate it a few times! We've done this with Brandon leading the way and myself. I like that it's an interchangeable pose and it allows you to show off the back.

*Tip: Find a street or location that is pretty because this type of photo will be slightly off center.

5. The Turn and Look

This is seriously a go-to for us. In fact, we've said that we may need to tone it down on the turn and look! It's a fool proof pose and if anyone in the relationship is camera shy (Brandon used to be), this is an awesome way to make them feel more comfortable.

*Tip: Make eye contact and try to make each other laugh!

6. The Classic

Everybody needs a great, classic photo in their home. Something that is timeless and doesn't show what season it was or even what year it was. The goal with this photo is to have it act as something that could sit in your home for years to come and you wouldn't get tired of it. Obviously, many people have this kind of photo with their wedding; however, we challenge you to find another one, outside of your wedding day.

*Tip: Look online for classic photos that you love. We'll search "Couple Engagement Photos" for some great options.

7. The Casual Conversation

For some reason, this photo managed to look like Brandon and I were mid-conversation, sharing a laugh over something and playing around. I love the carefree vibe that it gives off and this pose offers you lots of options in how you capture it.

*Tip: Actually talk! It's awkward if you're just staging this one. Try to have a lighthearted conversation, even if it's about something silly.

8. The Eat and Drink Pose

Capture that glass of wine or a bite of a cupcake with a photo! Better yet, feed each other a bite. This is kind of a cheesy pose, but definitely has its time and place.

*Tip: This one actually should be staged. You won't like the picture if you have crumbs all over your face!

9. The Arm Over the Shoulder

I love the casual nature of this pose and the masculinity that it brings to any guy. It's easy to do and establishes a closeness to the couple.

*Tip: Grab his/her hand to make it look more comfortable and at-ease.

10. The Kiss on the Cheek

This pose is fantastic because it works both ways. A sweet kiss on the cheek can sometimes be more meaningful than anything else!

*Tip: Ladies, no lip gloss! It leaves a sticky color residue on his cheek (which could interfere for the next picture!)

  2. So many cute photos and I love the variety of poses! Andrew hates taking pictures so before we had our engagement photos done we also had very few together. But he knew when he married a photographer he would have to adjust :) pictures together are so fun to look back on!
